The acquisition of a garden that’s reminiscent of an African Savanna, and a Russian style three-year plan to reclaim it, hurl Henry and Evelyn into a world of high-octane gardening.

A visit to a four-acre wildlife garden, open under the National Garden Scheme, rekindles their enthusiasm for wildlife and helps them realise that even a town garden can bring a lot to the table. In the back of their minds, they wondered if one day, they too could open for the NGS.

Later, a flurry of emails propels them into the world of television and the scrutiny of the National Garden Scheme. Will they satisfy the exacting standards of the county organisers and be accepted? Find out as you join them in their journey, “Up the Garden Path.”

Up The Garden Path eBook Henry Butterfield

I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Henry's struggle to tame his garden and get it accepted to the National Garden Scheme. I also love the descriptions of the plants, and the work he had to do to get the garden in order, and the deadlines he had to meet for the tv company that followed their progress. Interesting that he decided to make the garden an urban wildlife garden, too. However, I couldn't give it 5 stars, as there were parts of the book that seem to have escaped proofreading - and reading won ton instead of wanton and various other similar errors meant I hd to downgrade it to 4 stars.

Up The Garden Path eBook Henry Butterfield Reviews

Well, if you want details about how to set up a garden that’s geared towards giving wildlife the best experience of their short lives – this book has it in spades. Written with self deprecating humour that lifts the narrative above and beyond what could have become just another gardening book, this is immensely readable, yet informative. Another big plus is that it made me feel quite positive about my 40’ x 5’ strip of garden because by accident, rather than design, I’m doing a lot of things right – massive room for improvement it’s true but I feel motivated, having just finished this book, to apply informed changes to my plot. The author also walks us through the rise and fall of getting the garden and gardeners (I include his long suffering wife) ready to face the television camera with the aim of getting their wildlife garden good enough to be included in the National Gardens Scheme. The author is quick to admit his own failings – mixing concrete seems to be a limited skill and being addicted to garden centres could lead to possible financial problems. I also detected an element of procrastination (I can relate) though the lady of the garden appears to have this under control. A delightful read. Warm, amusing and informative.
Really enjoyed this book as it wasn't
> all about a boring, formal garden. What a book! Had just about everything in it, from
> paving a driveway to how to kill rats, not to mention the properties
> of cement! You painted beautiful "word pictures" which allowed me to
> use my imagination,. Someone who had read your book lamented
> that as a gardening book they were disappointed that you didn't have
> pictures of flowers (boring, boring), but know something? I didn't
> miss that at all because it wasn't about the flowers but about the
> wonderful wildlife you were working hard to attract. It had drama,
> humour, suspense and hope, everything I look for in a book. Great,
> loved it!! .Looking forward to hearing more about the wildlife you have
attracted, perhaps a sequel?

An absolutely delightful book about a couple's effort to turn their average size town garden in North Devon into a wildlife haven and submit it into the National Garden Scheme.

Henry Butterfield has both experience as a gardener and a few qualifications after completing a number of courses and ending up with the Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 certificate
He is also has some experience as a writer with gardening articles published in various local newspapers and some magazines. Also qualified with a diploma in Literature & Creative Writing.

This book is a non fictional memoir account of Henry and his wife Evelyn's hard work towards making their garden acceptable to those who decide which gardens are eligible for the National Garsen Scheme.
Filming takes place at various stages during the work in progress in their garden involving the well known gardening expert Carol Klein, who is one of my favourites.
Henry has the writer's knack of making even the mundane jobs and events in the garden sound interesting and often laugh out loud, but I think his nervous habit of cracking jokes at inappropriate times, although hilarious, would drive me insane.
I really enjoyed this book and with family living in North Devon I am familiar with the places mentioned within the book such as RHS Rosemoor and BJ's Value store!
4.5 stars
Henry's conversational, friendly, and often humorous book was delightful. Describes the efforts of dragging a wilderness garden kicking and screaming out of imagination, hard work and grit.
I like the man's point of view of gardening and his relaxed way of gardening. Once he is convinced more nature balanced is the way to go, he changes directions and encourages us to learn his methods.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Henry's struggle to tame his garden and get it accepted to the National Garden Scheme. I also love the descriptions of the plants, and the work he had to do to get the garden in order, and the deadlines he had to meet for the tv company that followed their progress.
